This section describes how do select a digital photo frame.
A DPF consists of three main parts: LCD-panel, PCB and frame.
All of these components have to be checked. In addition, also accessories and especially usability is important.
Therefore, it is recommended to test the models, either by visiting the factory or by buying samples.
Besides that it may be important to ask the minimum order quantity and whether OEM is possible.
The necessary certificates (FCC in USA, CE and RoHS in Europe) should be a k.o.-criterion for buyers.

1. LCD-panel (Liquid Crystal Display Panel)
For sizes of 7″ or below, mostly analogue TFT LCD panels are used.
Bigger models usually use digital panels. Their quality is much better.
However, the price also goes up. In general 4:3 is better than 16:9, as digital cameras use 4:3.
Some models, however, include a button that allows to switch that ratio.
The resolution for a 7″ frame is usually 480 * 600pixel. The higher the resolution, the better the picture quality.
The important point with panels is to ask whether the panels are new or recycled.
An indirect way to find out whether the panels are recycled is that for recycled panels no RoHS certificate can be provided.
Popular panel brands are Innolux, AU or LG, but also Sharp.

2. PCB (Printed Circuit Board)
The PCB is the heart of a digital photo frame. For the board it is important, which solution is being used on the board.
Solution is the used software. Popular solutions are Zoran for the simple function models.
For the simple “multimedia” digital photo frames Sunplus, Cheertek (both are originally solutions for DVD players),
MTK and Macronix (the original solution for digital photo cameras) are widely used.
For the improved “multimedia” digital photo frames Amlogic is usually used.
The solution is just the technical background. For the user the outcome is important.
The solution decides which file types and which cards can be supported.
It also decides whether a built-in-memory is possible.

2.1. Supported cards
For digital photo cameras different kinds of memory cards exists. Different brands use different cards.
It is hard to find information about the market share of memory cards.
However, I find one statistics which shows the market share of memory cards in Western Europe in 2004.
I assume that the market share for the cards is not significantly different in the USA. In 2004,
25 million digital photo cameras have been sold in Western Europe.

Top 5 producers 2004

Company Market Share Memory Card
1. Canon 16.8 % SD
2. Sony 14.0 % MS
3. Olympus 12.5 % xD
4. Nikon 10.4 % SD
5. Fuji 10.0 % xD
6. Others 36.3 % mainly SD
Some older cameras also use CF or SM cards.
In addition, a USB host can be important, as many people use USB memory sticks.
A USB host should be standard for multimedia photo frames.
A USB host can be an alternative if the photo frame does not support all memory card.
With a USB host, a card-reader can be bought additionally.
Therefore it indirectly can support all memory cards.
High-end products also have a USB slave.

2.2. Supported file formats
Digital cameras uses JPEG file format to store the pictures. However, a lot of more file formats exists.

Picture formats
For digital photo frames, JPEG pictures are standard.
All products can display JPEG as this format is the file format used by digital cameras to store pictures.
Some photo frames can also display BMP, GIF, PNG or TIFF.
However, these file formats are not commonly used for pictures and therefore not very important.

Audio formats
For multimedia photo frames MP3 is standard. Notable here is that for an export to Europe the Sisvel license is necessary.
Some products can also play WMA (also widely used in the Internet) or WAV-files.
WAV files are usually very big and therefore not widely used, especially for sharing in the internet.

Video formats
Standard video format which are supported are AVI and MPEG I, II and IV, but also MP4.
Even if the manufacturer assures that AVI or MP4 is supported, the photo frame may not display all AVI or MP4 files.
This is because AVI and MP4 are file containers and no file format and may contain many files in different codecs,
which the photo frame may not be able to read.

Other formats
Some products, especially Amlogic solutions, can display text files in the txt-format.
For some newer models, even lyrics for MP3 are supported.

2.3. Built-in memory
Built-in memory can be very useful. Only this way, data can be stored in the machine directly.
Currently the maximum capacity is 2 GB. Cheertek solution can maximum support 32 MB plus 3 screen protection pictures,
which can not be changed. Sunplus does not have any internal memory, but it can store 3 pictures which can be changed.
Some solutions do not support internal memory at all.

2.4. File management
Better photo frames can also manage the files. Therefore it is possible to delete, rename and copy files between the cards and internal memory.

2.5. Extras
Some models offer some extras such as calendar, clock, alarm, auto on/off or a voice recorder.
The solution also decides whether the photo frame has AV in/out. With AV out,
the pictures on the photo frame can be watched on a TV.
With AV in a DVD player can be connected with the photo frame and it is possible to watch movies on the DPF.

3. Frame
The digital photo frame is as much furniture as it is an electronic product.
Therefore the outside appearance is important.
Many customers will base their buying decision on the outside appearance.
Usually frames are made of plastic (often with a transparent, outside acrylic frame).
These frames can be made in every colors. Additionally, also wooden and metal/aluminum frames are common.
Many companies charge more for wooden frames.
Some companies offer specialties such as light in the frame.
Some companies also offer changeable frames and deliver more frames for one DPF.

4. Accessories
Accessories, such as additional frame plates, cables etc. should be considered.

5. Usability

A very important aspect is the usability. Therefore testing is recommended, either by factory visit or by buying samples.

Simple function models usually do not have a remote control. They are operated by buttons on the machine.
The buttons should be easy to operate.
More complicated models use a remote control with OSD (open screen display) menu.
This interface has to be user friendly and easy to operate with and without remote control.
As for the remote control, it should not include too many buttons.

LED Projector
From billboards to compact projectors, LED (light emitting diode) technology has exploded in recent years.
Thanks to LED, we can now easily transmit images up on a screen for meetings, classes, parties and more.
These days it’s all about size. If you can meet your needs without having to purchase and carry around a larger,
more traditional projector, you’re in luck with the new palm-size models out there.
It seems these days it’s a race to the bottom … at least when it come to cubic centimeters and grams.
However, bear in mind that the larger the audience, the more powerful (and probably larger) projector you will need.
But even then, you should be able to find LED projectors that will meet your needs.

Factors that you need to consider include lumens, the measure of brightness, and contrast ratio,
the distance from the lightest light to the darkest dark. Pay attention to the shelf life of your device,
especially any lights that are used. Do not trash original packaging and paperwork, as you may need the warranty later.
Keep in mind that with all the buzz about palm-size projector,
you may find that you need to kick it up to the next level.

There are different advantages and disadvantages for these chipsets.

1.The biggest advantage of this solution is its cheapest price. It can support display pictures, play music and video format.
Its disadvantage is that when displaying photos, the screen will work with slight Vibrations.Besides, it can’t support built-in memory flash only work with memory card insertion. Some such as 8380 and 8381 can’t support Divx. .

2.Zoran solution: For this solution, there is already built-in screen driver,
it can support slide show pictures, Support USB port, CF/SD/MMC/MS card, AV out and so on; It also can support play JPG,WMA,MP3,AVI,DIVX,MEPG1-4 formats and 9 pictures at one screen at the same time.however Neither it can support built-in memory flash and music background and can’t connect to computer directly.
The solution is a little better.

MTK8303 solution: Has built in 16M memory flash which can at least store 26pcs of pictures. The biggest advantage of this solution is it supports DVB-T TV receiver . .
MX: This solution is good and can meet many requirements.
The biggest advantage for this solution is that it can support built-in memory flash and background music and can connect to computer to download files directly. Also support display pictures, play music and video like ESS, Zoran.
The disadvantage is its price is a little high.

SUN SPG-291 solution: support USB port, built-in memory flash, background music, game and AV out.
but the disadvantage is that it can only support SD/MMC memory card.

Amlogic solution: support built-in memory flash, USB port and connect to computer to download files directly
and also support back ground music, alarm, calendar . The memory cards it can support including CF/MMC/SD/MS/XD ,
Support copy files from one card to another card in one frame.
Of course, its price is relatively higher than others.

With hundreds of HDD players on the market, finding the one that meets your needs can be a confusing and daunting experience. Here are 5 tips for your buying a HDD Player:

1. Check the capacity of the player. Unfortunately, a HDD Media Player will always have a limit. Don’t just buy something online if they do not indicate its capacity. Usually their capacity could be from 80GB up to 600GB or even more. The higher the price, the bigger its capacity.

2. Check the file format that the player support. Usually, a HDD Player can support VCD, DVD, MPEG1/2/4, DIVX3.X-5.X, AVI, ASF, VOB, DAT, MP4, MPG, PEG, BMP, GIF and MP3.

3. Format your hard disk – visit a computer technician so that he/she could format your hard disk as a storage device. If they are not properly formatted, computer will have trouble reading or transferring the information to your hard disk.

4. If possible, purchase an player with a built-in hard disk – although this is rare, it certainly beats the trouble of inserting the hard disk inside your player. You don’t even have to worry about format since usually they are already formatted to be read.

5. Compare the prices of different suppliers’ offer, then get the HDD Player with multifunction but the lowest price.

Calif. requires TVs to be more energy-efficient; supporters hope rule becomes national model
California regulators have adopted the nation’s first energy-efficiency standards for televisions,
a move that will eventually ban power-hungry sets from the state’s store shelves.

Wednesday’s action by the California Energy Commission could lead the way in a general reform of standards for an industry
increasingly focused on wide-view, flat-screen, high-definition sets.
The 5-0 vote by the California Energy Commission is just the latest effort by the state to secure its place
in the forefront of the environmental movement.

California represents such a big consumer market that environmental groups hope the new standards will lead manufacturers
to make energy-saving TVs for the rest of the nation, just as California’s stringent fuel standards
for cars and trucks forced automakers to produce more efficient models for all of the U.S.
“Once again, California is leading the way, and we hope others will follow,” said Noah Horowitz,
senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Some manufacturers warned that the regulations will cripple innovation, limit consumer choice and hurt California stores, because people could simply buy TVs out of state or online.
The industry also complained that manufacturers will be forced to make televisions with poorer picture quality and fewer features than those sold elsewhere in the U.S.
“Instead of allowing customers to choose the products they want, the commission has decided to impose arbitrary standards that will hamper innovation and limit consumer choice,”
said Jason Oxman, a vice president with the Consumer Electronics Association. “It will result in higher prices for consumers, job losses for Californians, and lost tax revenue for the state.”
Californians buy about 11 percent of the 35.4 million TVs sold in the U.S. each year, according to industry figures. The industry group said it was already working with the federal government
to promote more efficient TVs through the federal Energy Star program.
“We have every confidence this industry will be able to meet the rule and then some,”
Energy Commissioner Julia Levin said. “It will save consumers money,
it will help protect public health, and it will spark innovation.”

At least one TV manufacturer has said it could meet the standards — Vizio Inc., the largest seller of flat screens.
The regulations requiring televisions to be more efficient will be phased in beginning in 2011.
The new standards will apply to new televisions up to 58 inches. Those larger than 58 inches,
which account for no more than 3 percent of the market, were left out in a concession to sellers of high-end home-theater TVs.
But the commission is expected to regulate them in the future.

The commission estimates that TVs account for about 10 percent of a home’s electricity use.
The fear is that energy use will rise as people buy bigger, more elaborate TVs, put more of them in their homes, and watch them longer.
The average plasma TV uses more than three times as much energy as an old cathode-ray tube set. Liquid-crystal display,
or LCD, TVs use about 43 percent more energy than tube sets, according to Pacific Gas & Electric Co., the state’s biggest utility.
LCDs now account for about 90 percent of the 4 million TVs sold in California each year.
Under the rules adopted Wednesday, all new 42-inch TV sets must use less than 183 watts by 2011 and less than 116 watts by 2013.
That is considerably more efficient than flat-screen TVs placed on the market in recent years. A 42-inch Hitachi plasma TV sold in 2007 uses 313 watts,
while a 42-inch Sharp Liquid-crystal display, or LCD, TV draws 232 watts, according to the Energy Commission.
The energy commission previously set aggressive energy-efficiency standards for refrigerators, washing machines and other household appliances,
paving the way for more efficient models sold nationwide.
